Roe v. Wade has been overturned, and democrat politicians are apoplectic.
Abortion is one of the foundational planks of the democrat party's political platform; legal, accessible, and safe abortion is one of its core tenets, and most people, regardless of political affiliation, agree. Which is why everyone should heave a huge sigh of relief because, the Supreme Court's ruling notwithstanding, abortions will remain legal, accessible, and safe almost everywhere in the country.
But... it never had to get to this point; Roe v. Wade would still be standing but for the actions (or lack thereof) of... democrat politicians. Today, they're busy railing against the Supreme Court's decision, declaring the court and its ruling illegitimate, calling for the impeachment of justices who stood with the majority, and threatening to "pack the court." in retaliation. But perhaps they should take a moment for a little self-reflection and ask, "whose fault is it, really?"
First, for the past 49 years, congressional democrats refused to pass legislation which would have codified Roe v. Wade, a fatally flawed decision that was doomed from the start because, however important abortion rights may be, there was never a constitutionally enumerated right to the procedure. Had congress passed an abortion rights law... and democrat politicians held numerous "super majorities" over the years, the problem we're facing today wouldn't exist.
Second, not too long ago, democrat Harry Reid, acting in his capacity as the Senate Majority Leader, changed parliamentary rules to facilitate the passage of legislation with a simple majority that would have otherwise required 60 votes. Amongst the procedures affected was the confirmation process for Supreme Court justices. And then the senate flipped to republicans and democrats were unable to push through the nomination of Merrick Garland.
Meanwhile, democrat politicians nationwide dismissed any possibility that Donald Trump could become the republican nominee for president; Barack Obama publicly expressed scorn and derision at the notion. But he was, indeed, nominated, and then, during the campaign, Hillary Clinton, the heir apparent, considered by almost everyone to be a mortal lock to win the election, got lazy. She proceeded to disrespect half of America's population whilst "phoning it in;" she failed to visit swing states and, as they say, the rest is history.
And then, an unprecedented 3 Supreme Court positions opened up in just 4 years and, thanks to half a century of congressional democrat inaction, along with foresight-challenged democrat Harry Reid and a lazy, over-confident Hillary Clinton... and an aged and infirmed Ruth Bader Ginsberg's refusal to retire during the previous administration, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett were installed on the Supreme Court, all three of whom voted to strike down Roe v. Wade.
So... the moral of the story is this: In politics... and in life, short-sighted, short-term gains are very often offset by the unintended consequences of long-term outcomes. Which is why democrat politicians should be very careful when they consider packing the court. Rarely have precipitous political decisions failed to come back to bite those who make them square on the butt
And let's not forget, true to their mascot's species, democrats are... the party of asses.
