"All Hell shall fall upon the earth."
That's the distilled essence of the Book of Revelation, which chronicles the End of Days, a time when unrepentant sinners will be cast into the fiery furnace and the righteous raptured to the heavens.
Apparently... according to democrat politicians, liberals, and their media allies, the end times are upon us; the destruction of all things brought to you by the 6 Horsemen of the Apocalypse... the Supreme Court justices who ruled against Roe v. Wade.
Recently, I was ordained as a minister... one of the requisite studies was comparative religion, and very few openly condone abortion, almost none without restrictions regarding gestational age or maternal health considerations. At the dogmatic core of most religions, elective abortion remains a mortal sin.
Fortunately, America's founders were wise enough to separate church and state, so the often-intransigent tenets of religion weren't allowed to be imposed upon the people. So, religion-based anti-abortion considerations aside, in 1973, the Supreme court ruled that abortions were legal.
But that ruling was, constitutionally speaking, fatally flawed. For the past 49 years, lawmakers and jurists knew it... there never was a constitutionally enumerated right to an abortion, and congress never passed a law creating one. And now, half a century later, we're right back where we started.
If, for a moment, there was a pause in the apocalyptic rhetoric raining down from on high... the place where self-righteous, self-appointed arbiters of what's allowed gather to assail and demean those with whom they disagree, this moment in history might be considered a good thing... by both terminals of the abortion/anti-abortion continuum.
As is prescribed in a republic, each state will now be free to craft its own abortion legislation. Representatives will act in the preferred interest of the people who voted for them... abortion laws will then reflect the will of the people. Some states will have few restrictions, others will be more conservative. Those who disagree can either immediately relocate to places which already reflect their abortion philosophy, or mount a political effort to change the law... the very essence of the democratic process.
And... because congress has the authority to pass laws that govern all states, congressionally sponsored abortion legislation would set national standards all states must follow. Tis a simple resolution, you'd think; we elect members of congress to solve problems like this.
But... congress has avoided the subject for half a century, and it isn't likely to step-up now because, at the extremes of the abortion continuum are members of congress who adamantly oppose all abortions at any time, and others who'll tolerate nothing less than abortions for any reason right up to birth. Congressional gridlock... imagine that.
And so, the metaphorical… for now, fires continue to rage; for abortion rights advocates, it's Armageddon as promises of violence are shouted from on high, some of which come from members of congress who could actually solve the problem, but won't. Of course, when the violence commences, they'll flee to the protection of their armed security details where, with near-metaphysical certitude, they'll dismiss all inevitable deaths as extra-late term abortions.
With the end of days apparently nigh, you might find Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, a couple of late-stage and partial birth abortion zealots, seeking refuge in church... both are card-carrying Catholics who've been denied Communion.
Post-rapture, it's a cinch... they'll still be sitting there.
Amen.
