The following is a bit wonkish, a subject with non-linear complexities, one that requires a better than average attention span. Fortunately, members of my reading audience are a little wonky, too; you're capable of comprehending complex concepts... you have an amazing attention span, which is why you'll have no problem contemplating this...
Yesterday I listened with amusement to political pundits pretending Joe Biden is something more than a puppet in a suit. One MSNBC contributor described him as "sharp as a knife," perhaps even sharper than the one cannibals used to carve up Joe Biden's Uncle Finnegan. But despite all their glowing encomiums, behind the bluff and bluster, they know Joe Biden is a doddering, incoherent, senile old man, and the rest of America does too. Over at CNN, an uber-positive pundit predicted a "wave election" for Joe Biden; he promised Donald Trump will never make up the 7 million vote deficit from the last election.
Okay, and here's where it gets wonky... stipulating that Joe Biden received 81 million votes to Trump's 74 million, consider this: Take away the vote totals for both Biden and Trump from California, Illinois, and New York, meaning only the other 47 states are counted... Donald Trump won by almost 2 million votes! Even if every single voter in all three of those deep-blue states cast their ballots for Biden, it wouldn't make any difference in the electoral tally.
The point is, it doesn't matter how many popular votes Biden gets in reliably blue states, nor does it matter how many votes Trump receives in reliably red states... what matters is the electoral college and the number of electors awarded in swing states. In 2020, Trump lost Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Arizona by a combined total of 124 thousand votes... that's less than one tenth of a single percentage point. Flip just those 4 states, and Trump wins the electoral vote by 289-249. At the moment, that's exactly what's happening, he's ahead of Biden in those states.... not to mention Michigan and Nevada, too.
As bad as that is for Joe Biden and the ever-dwindling number of people who still support him, it's actually worse... his overall approval rating is in the 30s and he's upside down by significant double-digit margins on all the major issues of concern to the American people. Over 80% of democrats and republicans combined don't believe he's capable or competent, and Joe Biden isn't helping himself with demonstrably confabulated stories about cannibalized kinfolk, not to mention his refusal to condemn antisemitic protesters chanting "Death to America" in American streets.
I'm sure you managed to wend your way through the wonk and navigated the conceptual complexities with no difficulties; surely the preceding didn't strain your attention span... I imagine it only served to reinforce things you already knew. Alas, there are those who are far less erudite and informed than you, people who still believe Joe Biden is as "sharp as a knife." Fortunately...
There's no chance they'll ever cut themselves with it.
